Novel food raises a handful of sensible questions. This page answers them in order, starting with the fundamentals and moving to applications.
This page was last updated on 2026-05-06 and is reviewed periodically as new material appears.
Regulatory treatment of NMN differs by country and has changed over time. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has stated that NMN is excluded from the definition of a dietary supplement because it was investigated as a drug before being marketed as a supplement; enforcement and legal interpretation continue to evolve. In the European Union, NMN may require authorization as a novel food before sale. In Japan, NMN has been marketed in some food products, while it is not approved as a therapeutic drug in major markets. These categories affect labeling, permitted claims, and quality oversight.
Solid NMN is generally handled as a moisture-sensitive and light-sensitive material. Suppliers commonly recommend storage at minus 20 degrees Celsius in a sealed, desiccated container, protected from light. Aqueous solutions are less stable than the solid and may degrade faster at elevated temperatures or extreme pH values. Because NMN contains a phosphate ester and a glycosidic bond, hydrolysis and other degradation pathways are plausible under unfavorable conditions. Stability data from independent laboratories remain limited, so handling recommendations often reflect supplier practice rather than published consensus.
Analytical measurement of NMN typically uses high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, often at a wavelength near 260 nanometers. Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry provides greater sensitivity and specificity, especially for biological samples. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy can confirm structure and detect certain impurities. Purity values reported by suppliers depend on the analytical method, calibration standards, and whether related compounds such as nicotinamide or NAD+ are included in the calculation. Independent verification is useful because supplement labels may not fully describe the tested material.
Quality control for NMN focuses on identity, purity, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits. Because the molecule can absorb water, moisture content and packaging are relevant to shelf life. Suppliers may provide certificates of analysis, but independent verification is often needed for research or commercial use. The long-term stability of different crystal forms, salt forms, and formulations is not fully characterized in the public literature. Some degradation products and their effects on product performance remain open questions.
As a commercial ingredient, nicotinamide mononucleotide is commonly supplied as a powder or capsule. Its stability depends on temperature, moisture, pH, and light exposure. Hydrolytic and thermal degradation can increase over time, so manufacturers and laboratories often store material cold and dry. Purity is typically assessed with chromatographic methods, and identity can be confirmed by mass spectrometry. Published stability data for specific finished products remain limited. More data would help define shelf life under real-world conditions.

| Common analytical method | HPLC-UV | Often confirmed with LC-MS/MS for identity and purity |
| Purity assessment | 95% or higher typical research grade | Values vary by supplier and analytical method |
| Regulatory status | Varies by country | Not approved as a drug; US FDA has stated exclusion from dietary supplement definition |
Quality control for NMN materials typically includes appearance, assay, impurity profile, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits. A certificate of analysis summarizes specified tests, but the underlying methods and laboratory accreditation matter. Regulatory treatment varies by country; NMN is sold as a dietary supplement in some markets, while other jurisdictions restrict its use in foods or classify it differently. Independent verification can reduce risks of mislabeling or substitution. Questions remain about how product purity, storage history, and formulation affect delivered dose in humans.
Solid NMN is a polar, water-soluble nucleotide that can absorb moisture from air. Its phosphate ester is susceptible to hydrolysis, and degradation is faster in aqueous solution, under strongly acidic or alkaline conditions, and at elevated temperatures. For laboratory and commercial handling, the solid is typically kept desiccated, protected from light, and stored frozen. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can introduce moisture and accelerate breakdown. Stability data for specific formulations should be generated rather than assumed from the parent compound.
Identity and purity of NMN are commonly assessed by liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection or mass spectrometry. High-performance liquid chromatography can separate related impurities such as nicotinamide, nicotinamide riboside, and NAD+ depending on the method. Mass spectrometry provides molecular mass confirmation, while nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy helps establish structure and anomeric form. Quantitative assays often use calibration curves and, in biological samples, stable isotope-labeled internal standards. Method validation addresses specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and limits of detection.
Stability studies indicate that NMN is sensitive to heat, light, and pH extremes. In aqueous solution, hydrolysis can cleave the phosphate linkage or convert NMN to related nicotinamide derivatives, with degradation accelerating at elevated temperatures and alkaline conditions. Solid material is generally more stable when kept dry and cold, and research-grade supplies are often stored at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower, protected from light and moisture. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles of solutions can promote degradation, so aliquoting is a common laboratory practice. The exact shelf life depends on purity, counterion, packaging, and storage history.
Quality control for NMN focuses on identity, purity, and the absence of harmful contaminants. Certificates of analysis may report high-performance liquid chromatography purity, mass spectrometry identity, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits, depending on grade and intended use. Because NMN can exist as different isomers, salts, or hydrates, specification sheets should state the exact form being tested. There is no single globally harmonized purity standard for NMN products. Open questions include which degradation products are most relevant under real-world storage and how analytical results from different laboratories can be compared reliably.
Analytical measurement of NMN typically uses reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection near 260 nm. Mass spectrometry, often coupled to liquid chromatography, provides sensitive quantification and confirmatory identification in biological matrices. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is used to verify molecular structure and distinguish related nucleotides. Because NMN is polar and poorly retained on conventional reversed-phase columns, ion-pairing reagents or hydrophilic interaction chromatography are sometimes employed. Reported purity values depend on the chosen method, calibration standard, and whether related substances are resolved.
== Cause == There is a disc between each of the vertebrae in the spine. A healthy, well-hydrated disc will contain a great deal of water in its center, known as the nucleus pulposus, which provides cushioning and flexibility for the spine. Much of the mechanical stress that is caused by everyday movements is transferred to the discs within the spine and the water content within them allows them to effectively absorb the shock. At birth, a typical human nucleus pulposus will contain about 80% water. However natural daily stresses and minor injuries can cause these discs to gradually lose water as the annulus fibrosus, or the tough outer fibrous material of a disc, weakens. Because degenerative disc disease is largely due to natural daily stresses, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists have suggested it is not truly a "disease" process. This water loss makes the discs more flexible and results in the gradual collapse and narrowing of the gap in the spinal column. As the space between vertebrae gets smaller, extra pressure can be placed on the discs causing tiny cracks or tears to appear in the annulus. If enough pressure is exerted, it is possible for the nucleus pulposus material to seep out through the tears in the annulus and can cause what is known as a herniated disc. As the two vertebrae above and below the affected disc begin to collapse upon each other, the facet joints at the back of the spine are forced to shift which can affect their function.
During preparation for the Fram expedition to the North Pole in 1893–1896, 33 dogs were purchased from the Nenets people. Of these dogs, 28 were used in an attempt on the North Pole; none of those survived. The remaining dogs, including pups born during the voyage, were left aboard the ship. In April 1893 the bitch had another litter, most of them white. According to Nansen's notes "all the dogs were strong, tough and excellent at pulling sleds; they worked very well in hunting Polar bears [as well]." These dogs would become the original Samoyeds. British Zoologist Ernest Kilburn-Scott is widely considered the founder of Samoyed breed. In 1889, he returned to England with a puppy he had purchased from a Samoyed encampment near Arkhangelsk. In the early days, imported dogs were a wide array of colors. However, it was widely believed that the "true Samoyeds", as originally bred in Siberia, were predominantly white. In 1909, the first official breed standard for the Samoyed was developed in England. In 1898–1900, Carsten Borchgrevink brought 90 Samoyeds to the southern hemisphere during the Southern Cross Expedition. In his book To the South Polar Regions, expedition member Louis Bernacchi wrote:

As carbon dioxide concentrations rise, the rate at which sugars are made by the light-independent reactions increases until limited by other factors. RuBisCO, the enzyme that captures carbon dioxide in the light-independent reactions, has a binding affinity for both carbon dioxide and oxygen. When the concentration of carbon dioxide is high, RuBisCO will fix carbon dioxide. However, if the carbon dioxide concentration is low, RuBisCO will bind oxygen instead of carbon dioxide. This process, called photorespiration, uses energy, but does not produce sugars. RuBisCO oxygenase activity is disadvantageous to plants for several reasons:
The Essendon Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers or colloquially the Dons, is a professional Australian rules football club that plays in the Australian Football League (AFL), the game's premier competition. Formed by the McCracken family in their Ascot Vale home in 1872, the club played its first recorded game in 1873. From 1878 until 1896, the club played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), where it won four consecutive premierships between 1891 and 1894. In 1896, Essendon joined seven other clubs to form the breakaway Victorian Football League (known as the AFL since 1990), winning the inaugural VFL premiership in 1897. Headquartered at Windy Hill from 1922 to 2013, the club moved to The Hangar in late 2013. The club currently shares its home games between Docklands Stadium and the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Andrew McGrath serves as the club captain as of 2026. Essendon is one of Australia's most successful and prominent football clubs, having won 16 VFL/AFL premierships, which is tied (along with Carlton and Collingwood) for the most of any club in the competition. The club experienced notable golden eras under captain-coach Dick Reynolds in the 1940s and 1950s, and under coach Kevin Sheedy from the 1980s to the early 2000s, cultivating the iconic "Baby Bombers" team in 1993 and recording a historically dominant season in 2000. However, the club has struggled to achieve significant on-field success in the 21st century, having not won a finals match since 2004.
Noma (also known as gangrenous stomatitis or cancrum oris) is a rapidly-progressive and often-fatal gangrenous infection of the mouth and face. Noma usually begins as an ulcer on the gums and rapidly spreads into the jawbone, cheek, and facial soft tissues. This is followed by death of the facial tissues and fatal sepsis. Survivors are left with severe facial disfigurement often with impairments in breathing, swallowing, speaking, and vision. In 2023, Noma was added to the World Health Organization's list of neglected tropical diseases. This disease is linked to poverty and malnutrition; noma has also been seen in severely immunocompromised people in the developed world. It is preventable by proper nutrition and oral hygiene. Noma is most common in impoverished environments with poor healthcare infrastructure; as a result, many cases go undiagnosed, untreated, and unreported. It is an opportunistic infection linked to several microbes that take advantage of malnutrition and compromised immunity. There is no evidence of direct transmission from person to person. In the early stages, it can be treated effectively with antibiotics and nutrition supplements. If diagnosed early enough, there can be proper wound healing. After recovering, patients with disfigurement require complex surgical rehabilitation. There are no reliable estimates of its prevalence – in 1998 WHO estimated that there were 140,000 cases per year with a fatality rate of 90%.
== Temperature control and product preparation == Insulated shipping containers, reflective barriers, gel packs, and phase-change materials manage temperature without generating heat or cooling. These are generally classified as passive thermal packaging. Some packages contain separate compartments that create an exothermic or endothermic reaction. These systems can heat or cool a product without an external appliance. Self-heating food packaging is used for some beverages, meals, and field rations. Microwave packages may contain susceptor materials that absorb microwave energy and convert it into heat. Susceptors can improve surface browning or crisping. Other microwave designs regulate steam release, pressure, or heating distribution. Some dispensing packages meter, mix, foam, spray, or activate their contents during use. Examples include dual-component adhesive cartridges, inhalers, spray containers, and packages that combine ingredients immediately before dispensing. Lubricant-impregnated and low-surface-energy coatings have also been studied as methods of improving the emptying of viscous products from containers.
They found that the elastic stiffness is identical and strength is only slightly lower than those in pristine graphene. In the same year, researchers from University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Los Angeles probed bi-crystalline graphene with TEM and AFM. They found that the strength of grain boundaries indeed tends to increase with the tilt angle. While the presence of vacancies is not only prevalent in polycrystalline graphene, vacancies can have significant effects on the strength of graphene. The consensus is that the strength decreases along with increasing densities of vacancies. Various studies have shown that for graphene with a sufficiently low density of vacancies, the strength does not vary significantly from that of pristine graphene. On the other hand, a high density of vacancies can severely reduce the strength of graphene. Compared to the fairly well-understood nature of the effect that grain boundary and vacancies have on the mechanical properties of graphene, there is no clear consensus on the general effect that the average grain size has on the strength of polycrystalline graphene. In fact, three notable theoretical or computational studies on this topic have led to three different conclusions. First, in 2012, Kolakowski and Myer studied the mechanical properties of polycrystalline graphene with "realistic atomistic model", using molecular-dynamics (MD) simulation. To emulate the growth mechanism of CVD, they first randomly selected nucleation sites that are at least 5A (arbitrarily chosen) apart from other sites.

=== Thyroglobulin antibodies === In the clinical laboratory, thyroglobulin testing can be complicated by the presence of anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (ATAs, alternatively referred to as TgAb). Anti-thyroglobulin antibodies are present in 1 in 10 normal individuals, and a greater percentage of patients with thyroid carcinoma. The presence of these antibodies can result in falsely low (or rarely falsely high) levels of reported thyroglobulin, a problem that can be somewhat circumvented by concomitant testing for the presence of ATAs. The ideal strategy for a clinician's interpretation and management of patient care in the event of confounding detection of ATAs is testing to follow serial quantitative measurements (rather than a single laboratory measurement). ATAs are often found in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease. Their presence is of limited use in the diagnosis of these diseases, since they may also be present in healthy euthyroid individuals. ATAs are also found in patients with Hashimoto's encephalopathy, a neuroendocrine disorder related to—but not caused by—Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
Biochemistry studies the chemical properties of important biological molecules, like proteins, and in particular the chemistry of enzyme-catalyzed reactions. The biochemistry of cell metabolism and the endocrine system has been extensively described. Other areas of biochemistry include the genetic code (DNA, RNA), protein synthesis, cell membrane transport, and signal transduction.
Gelatine art desserts, also known as 3D gelatine desserts, are made by injecting colourful shapes into a flavoured gelatine base. Creations by Lourdes Reyes Rosas of Mexico City kicked off the growth in popularity of this 3D gelation art technique in the early 1990s, which spread to Western and Pacific countries. These desserts are made using high-quality gelatine that has a high bloom value and low odour and taste. The clear gelatine base is prepared using gelatine, water, sugar, citric acid and food flavouring. When the clear gelatine base sets, colourful shapes are injected using a syringe. The injected material usually consists of a sweetener (most commonly sugar), some type of edible liquid (milk, cream, water, etc.), food colouring and a thickening agent such as starch or additional gelatine. The shapes are drawn by making incisions in the clear gelatine base using sharp objects. Coloured liquid is then allowed to fill the crevice and make the cut shape visible. Most commonly, the shapes are drawn using sterile medical needles or specialised pre-cut gelatine art tools that allow the shape to be cut and filled with colour at the same time. Gelatine art tools are attached to a syringe and used to inject a predetermined shape into gelatine. When combined with other ingredients, such as whipping cream or mousse, gelatine art desserts can be assembled into formations resembling a cake.
The vagina is a structure of animals in which the female is internally fertilized, rather than by traumatic insemination used by some invertebrates. Although research on the vagina is especially lacking for different animals, its location, structure and size are documented as varying among species. In therian mammals (placentals and marsupials), the vagina leads from the uterus to the exterior of the female body. Female placentals have two openings in the vulva; these are the urethral opening for the urinary tract and the vaginal opening for the genital tract. Depending on the species, these openings may be within the internal urogenital sinus or on the external vestibule. Female marsupials have two lateral vaginas, which lead to separate uteri, but both open externally through the same orifice; a third canal, which is known as the median vagina, and can be transitory or permanent, is used for birth. The female spotted hyena does not have an external vaginal opening. Instead, the vagina exits through the clitoris, allowing the females to urinate, copulate and give birth through the clitoris. In female canids, the vagina contracts during copulation, forming a copulatory tie. Female cetaceans have vaginal folds that are not found in other mammals. Monotremes, birds, reptiles and amphibians have a cloaca and is the single external opening for the gastrointestinal, urinary, and reproductive tracts. Some of these vertebrates have a part of the oviduct that leads to the cloaca. Chickens have a vaginal aperture that opens from the vertical apex of the cloaca.

Solid NMN is commonly stored frozen at about minus 20 degrees Celsius, sealed against moisture, and protected from light. Solutions are typically prepared fresh because they can degrade more quickly. Specific storage conditions can vary by supplier and intended use.
Common methods include high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy can provide structural confirmation. Reported purity depends on the method and the reference standards used.
NMN is not approved as a therapeutic drug in the United States, European Union, or Japan. Its legal status as a supplement or food ingredient varies by jurisdiction. In the United States, the FDA has stated that NMN is excluded from the dietary supplement definition, though enforcement has been debated.
Laboratory samples are often kept cool, dry, and protected from light, with frozen storage used for longer periods. Finished products should follow label instructions and avoid excessive heat or moisture.
